{"id":984,"date":"2020-02-12T17:27:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T21:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/aomip\/?page_id=984"},"modified":"2021-06-18T09:44:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:44:15","slug":"validation-data-wsc-moorings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/aomip\/data\/validation-data\/validation-data-wsc-moorings\/","title":{"rendered":"Validation Data &#8211; WSC Moorings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>Validation Data &#8211; WSC Moorings<\/h1>\n<p>A Fram Strait section, with a focus on the West Spitsbergen Current, has been covered with a varying number of moorings continuously since September 1997 in the framework of the EU projects\u00a0VEINS\u00a0(Variability of exchanges in the Northern Seas) and\u00a0ASOF &#8211; N\u00a0(Arctic Subarctic Ocean Fluxes &#8211; North):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1997 &#8211; 1999 : 14 moorings,<\/li>\n<li>1999 &#8211; 2000 : 11 moorings,<\/li>\n<li>2000 &#8211; 2002 : 14 moorings,<\/li>\n<li>2002 &#8211; 2004 : ASOF &#8211; 17 moorings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The water column was covered from 10 m above the seabed to about 50 m below the surface. The observations extend from the eastern Greenland shelf break (6\u00b051&#8217;W) to the western shelf break of Spitsbergen (8\u00b040&#8217;E) at the latitude 78\u00b050&#8217;N (in 1997-2002 with a shift of the moorings west of 000\u00b0E to the latitude 79\u00b0N.<\/p>\n<p>A dataset is available comprised of monthly means of temperature and cross-section current (i.e., northward component) at 78\u00b050&#8217;N :<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>averaged between 5\u00b0E and 8\u00b040&#8217;E (the total width of the WSC included) within the Atlantic Water layer defined as:\n<ul>\n<li>layer 0-700 m (Mean_T_VC_5degE_700m.dat)<\/li>\n<li>water with T &gt; 1\u00b0C (Mean_T_VC_5degE_1degC.dat)<\/li>\n<li>water with T &gt;-0.1\u00b0C (Mean_T_VC_5degE_-0.1degC.dat)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>averaged between 7\u00b0E and 8\u00b040&#8217;E (the main core of the WSC included) within the Atlantic Water layer defined as:\n<ul>\n<li>layer 0-700 m (Mean_T_VC_7degE_700m.dat)<\/li>\n<li>water with T &gt;1\u00b0C (Mean_T_VC_7degE_1degC.dat)<\/li>\n<li>water with T &gt;-0.1\u00b0C (Mean_T_VC_7degE_-0.1degC.dat)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The data format is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Columns 1-3: year month day (day is not correct because data are centered in the midmonth)<\/li>\n<li>Column 4: mean temperature [\u00b0C]<\/li>\n<li>Column 5: mean current [cm\/s]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some plots with time series of monthly means (solid lines), and one year running average (dashed lines):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mean_T_5degE<\/li>\n<li>Mean_T_7degE<\/li>\n<li>Mean_VC_5degE<\/li>\n<li>Mean_VC_7degE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This data is kindly provided by\u00a0Agnieszka Beszczynska\u00a0of the AWI.
