HIGHBAY AND PROJECT ROOMS
The Innovation Hub includes a two-story, 3.026 sqft highbay, one 1,558 sqft Large Project Room, and two 575 sqft Project Rooms. One of the smaller Project Rooms is envisioned for primarily mechanical work and one for primarily electronic work.
Floorplans for the first floor are here (highbay, project rooms, & chem/cal lab)

AVAST DunkWorks provides a suite of advance prototyping tools for general purpose use, that projects resident in AVAST/QRF can use directly and efficiently. AVAST has new policies for DunkWorks and a mission to expand rapid prototyping capabilities more broadly throughout WHOI. Contact the AVAST Operations Manager for more information.
OUTSIDE TEST TANK
Projects resident within AVAST will receive support to use WHOI's current 'Sundance' tank, including additional research and test equipment for common test tank projects. This can be used for vehicle testing, acoustic experiments, and multiple other projects.
INSIDE TEST TANKS
AVAST maintains two large indoors test tank suitable for instrument and sensor projects or for conducting experiments needing appropriate volumes of water. One tank ('Big Orange') is for general purpose use. A second ('Big Yellow') is identical in size but outfitted with temperature control system to heat and cool, as well as a gas manifold for manipulating gas content within the chamber. Big Orange is located directly under the main crane in the AVAST highbay, for hoisting and immersing heavy equipment. Big Yellow is located adjacent to the AVAST chemistry/calibration room to support studies requiring realtime manipulation or characterization of physical or chemical attributes. Both are outfitted with windows for immediate viewing of equipment or experiments within each tank.
SMALLER TEST TANKS
AVAST has additional test tanks for specialized use. 'Long Orange' is appropriate for AUV ballasting or other similar uses. AVAST also has small plastic tanks ~100L volume for immersing smaller equipment or for conducting specialized manipulations. A portable chiller system can be used to alter temperature conditions in these smaller tanks.
CHEMISTRY / CALIBRATION ROOM & EQUIPMENT
AVAST's Innovation Hub contains a room set aside for projects or uses requiring clean space, a dedicated hood, or other controllable environments. This room opens to the highbay and is adjacent to the 'Big Yellow' test tank.
PRESSURE TEST EQUIPMENT
AVAST provides a small pressure test vessel for in-house testing of small sensors and other equipment. This particular resource represents a partnership between AVAST and WHOI PI Aleck Wang (MCG) to share Wang lab resources more broadly with the WHOI community. Such agreements help AVAST offset long-term equipment maintenance burdens on PIs who are open to sharing their equipment more broadly among the WHOI community. Contact the AVAST Director (Sam Laney) if you have AVAST-oriented resources that could have broader use within the WHOI community.
The Chem/Cal room contains a temperature-controlled environmental chamber (TestEquity TE-1027C 27 cubic feet, -73C to 175C, manual here , F4T controller manual here). It can be controlled by computer and side-ports allow for pass throughs of cables or tubing. This chamber can be used to cold-test electronics, batteries, sensors, and other equipment. It is also large enough to hold medium-sized experiments or small test tanks.
ADVANCED PROTOTYPING SHOP
The second floor of AVAST's Innovation Hub houses WHOI's Advanced Fabrication Lab, a WHOI machine shop outfitted with CNC machining equipment. This shop is available for prioritized for use by AVAST resident projects and programs in the QRF.
AVAST provides a range of screens and other AV equipment to facilitate hybrid meetings in the Social Hub and main classroom.
