Happy National Coffee Day! Between the long shifts and cold weather, we take our coffee consumption very seriously. I polled the crew and science team at lunch today and found that most people drink 4+ cups per day! This includes coffee available 24\/7 in the mess, from the drip coffee maker in the science boardroom, and from the Keurig coffee makers that many crew members keep in their cabins.<\/p>\r\n
Today, we are continuing our northward steam through the ice. The night shift completed a 3500 m cast early this morning, facing temperatures down to -5\u25e6<\/sup>C (although, with the wind chill, it felt closer to -8\u25e6<\/sup>C). These deep casts take several hours as the rosette is lowered through the water column at a rate of 0.5 – 1 m\/s. Now that we are back in the ice pack, we must continuously monitor the rosette wire for the full cast duration to ensure that no passing ice chunks collide with it. Given the amount of tension on the rosette wire, even a brief ice collision could cause serious damage.<\/p>\r\n
This afternoon, the day watch will complete another 3800 m cast at CB15, followed by a 3700 m cast at CB13. Between stations, members of the science team are passing the time with knitting, puzzles, and, of course, a coffee break or two.<\/p>\r\n
