{"id":602,"date":"2019-07-03T10:04:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T14:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/chrisreddylab\/?page_id=602"},"modified":"2022-12-23T13:40:51","modified_gmt":"2022-12-23T17:40:51","slug":"oil-spill-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/chrisreddylab\/oil-spill-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil Spill Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>Oil Spill Research<\/h1>\n<h3>Research<\/h3>\n<p>Reddy has been active researcher on oil spills that have occurred during the past fifteen years<sup>1<\/sup>, including the\u00a0<em>North Cape\u00a0<\/em>(Rhode Island; 1996),\u00a0<em>Bouchard 120<\/em>\u00a0(Buzzards Bay; 2003),\u00a0<em>Cosco Busan<\/em>\u00a0(San Francisco; 2007), and the\u00a0<em>Hebei Spirit<\/em>\u00a0(South Korea; 2007).<\/p>\n<p>He has also directed the most recent efforts to study the long term impacts of oil spills in salt marshes from the\u00a0<em>Florida<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Bouchard 65<\/em>\u00a0that occurred in Buzzards Bay, MA in 1969 and 1974, respectively. These studies have shown that the last remnants of spill fuel continue to have deleterious impacts on crabs, mussels, and marshes grasses today<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Professional Activities<\/h3>\n<p>He is an associate editor for\u00a0<em>Environmental Forensics<\/em>\u00a0and member of the editorial board for\u00a0<em>Marine Environmental Research<\/em>. Reddy has provided expert testimonies on oil spills for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, US Coast Guard, and US House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<h3>Outreach<\/h3>\n<p>In 2006, he was awarded an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship, which teaches scientists to communicate environmental science to the lay public, media, and policymakers. He presents scientific talks to lay audiences throughout the country and has published more than 20 op-ed articles or editorials on science-based issues in, for example, the\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Boston Globe<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>\u00a0magazine. He teaches a course and workshops for science graduate and postdoctoral students on communicating science to nonscientist audiences.<\/p>\n<h3>Honors<\/h3>\n<p>He has received many professional accolades, including the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Prize (2002), given to the &#8220;nation&#8217;s best and brightest academic researchers.&#8221; In 2009, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences invited him to participate in the Kavli Frontiers of Science symposium, the highest honor a scientist under 45 can receive from the academy.<\/p>\n<h3>Select Oil-Spill Related Publications (Peer reviewed)<\/h3>\n<p>Reddy, C.M. and J.G.
