{"id":1166,"date":"2015-04-27T08:09:41","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T12:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpstaging.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2022-01-14T13:52:47","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T17:52:47","slug":"everything-should-be-waterproof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/everything-should-be-waterproof\/","title":{"rendered":"Everything Should Be Waterproof"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/07\/Majetto_Kayak1.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2021\/07\/Majetto_Kayak1.jpg\" alt=\"Kayak\" height=\"999\" width=\"1502\" title=\"Majetto_Kayak1\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<p>On a recent field expedition to the remote western end of Kwajalein Atoll in the central Pacific, the team encountered a different sort of problem than what they&#8217;re used to. \u00a0There was no safe place for the boat to land. \u00a0The shallow reef flat and heavy surf prevented the 50\u2032 boat supplied by the US Army base on Kwajalein from getting close to shore or dropping anchor. \u00a0This problem, while unusual for a\u00a0group used to operating off of\u00a0shallow draft vessels in protected coastal waters, had been anticipated. \u00a0The gear was loaded into water tight Pelican cases, dry bags, wrapped in plastic bags, and strapped to a kayak. \u00a0The team then donned masks, snorkels, and flippers and swam in through the surf towing the gear behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately the gear (and personnel) all made it ashore intact, and after taking a few minutes to dry off and collect themselves,\u00a0it was time for the team to get to work.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/04\/Ebadon_surveying-1024x766.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/coastalgroup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/04\/Ebadon_surveying-1024x766.jpg\" alt=\"Walking on the Beach\" height=\"766\" width=\"1024\" title=\"Ebadon_surveying-1024x766\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\tJimmy Bramante (center) and Richard Sullivan (left) tow the ground penetrating radar across Ebadon Island at the extreme Western end of Kwajalein Atoll.
