{"id":658,"date":"2019-10-22T10:41:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T14:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/climatepaleoceanographygroup\/?page_id=658"},"modified":"2021-02-04T15:06:15","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T19:06:15","slug":"cryosphere","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ggoceanclimategroup\/research\/cryosphere\/","title":{"rendered":"Cryosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<h1>Cryosphere<\/h1>\n<p>The cryosphere plays in critical role in the Earth system, both responding to and having some control over the dynamics of the oceans, the atmosphere, the lithosphere and global climate. <strong>Glaciology<\/strong> is the study of ice and natural phenomena that involve ice.\u00a0 It is a true integration of geology, meteorology, oceanography, and climatology.<\/p>\n<p>Our main areas of glaciological research are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using ice-cores and ice sheet studies to advance our understanding of past climate change<\/li>\n<li>Applying field and remote sensing techniques to investigate ice sheet surface processes and recent change<\/li>\n<li>Understanding the controls on ice dynamics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our current research is focused on the polar ice sheets, and two specific geographic areas in particular: the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet.\u00a0 These regions have fast moving ice streams, fringing ice shelves, surface melting, a strong marine influence, show large changes since the last ice age, and have the potential for rapid future change and large sea level impacts<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67\" style=\"width: 1510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/bb-templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/09\/IMG_0381.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-67\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can have a caption.
