{"id":686,"date":"2018-06-28T10:05:23","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T14:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/groundwater\/?page_id=686"},"modified":"2021-05-20T15:46:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T19:46:14","slug":"alpha-scintillation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/groundwater\/facilities\/alpha-scintillation\/","title":{"rendered":"Alpha Scintillation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\tAlpha Scintillation\n\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2018\/06\/IMG_1731_52428.jpg\" alt=\"Short-lived Radium\" height=\"178\" width=\"250\" title=\"IMG_1731_52428\" \/>\n\t<h3>Short-lived Radium<\/h3>\n<p>We maintain a delayed coincidence counting system that is used for the quantifying the short lived radium isotopes (<sup>223<\/sup>Ra and\u00a0<sup>224<\/sup>Ra). \u00a0Samples are adsorbed onto a manganese fiber and then counted using the delayed coincidence system. \u00a0Samples are then ashed and counted in one of our coaxial gamma detectors for long lived radium isotopes (<sup>226<\/sup>Ra and\u00a0<sup>228<\/sup>Ra).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2018\/06\/Rnline1_52429.jpg\" alt=\"Rnline1_52429\" height=\"264\" width=\"250\" title=\"Rnline1_52429\" \/>\n\t<h3>Radon-222<\/h3>\nWe have the capability of collecting and analyzing for Radon a number of ways. The standard radon extraction method; using helium and liquid nitrogen to isolate the radon in a cold trap. Then transferring it to a Lucas cell and counting it using a photomultiplier tube detector (PMT).<br \/>\nWe currently have 2 extraction ports and approximately 6 PMT&#8217;s. \u00a0The dual radon counting system, model AC\/DC-DRC-MK-10-2, shown below was made for us by Robert Lupton of Applied Techniques Co.\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/groundwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/49\/2018\/06\/IMG_1724_52436.jpg\" alt=\"Durridge RAD 7\" height=\"298\" width=\"250\" title=\"IMG_1724_52436\" \/>\n\t<h3>Radon-222<\/h3>\n<p>More recently we have been using the Durridge RAD 7 electronic radon detector to measure radon in water and air. This instrument has made our analysis of radon much quicker, and more accurate.
