{"id":1024,"date":"2019-08-27T14:08:21","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T18:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/?page_id=1024"},"modified":"2021-07-20T11:23:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T15:23:21","slug":"itp-4-recovery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/data\/completed-missions\/itp-4\/itp-4-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"ITP 004 Recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\t<h1>ITP 4 Recovery Operations<\/h1>\r\n\t<p>By the time it was discovered that the ITP modem circuit was not working, it was too late to recover ITP 4 the same year.\u00a0\u00a0It became a priority to recover it the next year, as the profiler was probably collecting profiles that could be retrieved.\u00a0\u00a0In 2007, the drift of the ITP over the past year brought it close to the cruise track of the JOIS cruise on the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent.\u00a0\u00a0On August 15, a helicopter reconnaissance was unsuccessful in locating ITP4.\u00a0\u00a0It was located by the ship on the next day after receiving an updated location, and the recovery operations began on the morning of the 17th.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The way that the icebreaker was positioned in the ice floe allowed for the handling of the recovery gear and people over the side using the ship\u2019s crane.\u00a0\u00a0In the morning, everything was loaded on the ice, and a 1 m diameter ice core melted through the 3.0 m thick floe containing the ITP tether cable.\u00a0\u00a0After lunch, the ice was removed from the core and the profiler recovered.\u00a0\u00a0The profiler had been profiling the entire time since it was deployed, and 698 profiles were downloaded from the underwater instrument.<\/p>\r\n<p>More information and photos on the recovery are also available at:\u00a0<a
