{"id":1415,"date":"2019-08-29T15:17:07","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T19:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/?page_id=1415"},"modified":"2021-07-20T12:01:11","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T16:01:11","slug":"itp-16-deployment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/data\/completed-missions\/itp16\/itp-16-deployment\/","title":{"rendered":"ITP 016 Deployment"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\t<h1>ITP 16 Deployment Operations<\/h1>\r\n\t<p>ITP 16 was the first ITP deployed for DAMOCLES in IPY, and took place in early September 2007\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>Polarstern<\/em>.\u00a0 Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute\u00a0for Polar and Marine\u00a0Research\u00a0in Germany, Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russia and Japan Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan all contributed to the deployment efforts of all of the ice based instruments during the expedition.\u00a0 Despite the relative thinness of the ice, the drilling became difficult at the end due to seawater that was encountered near the bottom in the porous rotten ice at end of the melt season.\u00a0 Some problems were encountered while lowering the wire using the winch, as the wire sometimes chafed against the spool and several times the plastic coating had to be repaired (to ensure the integrity of the inductive modem circuit).\u00a0 This particular ITP system was deployed in the evening between 8 PM and midnight (UTC) and the underwater profiler responded to post-deployment interrogation successfully on the second attempt.<\/p>\r\n<p>More information on the buoy deployments\u00a0and expedition\u00a0is\u00a0provided\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10013\/epic.30947\">ARK-XXII\/2 cruise report<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/DSC00289_258573.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/DSC00289_258573.jpg\" alt=\"Valery Rusakov and Bert Rudels manipulate the ITP wire on the spool during lowering.\" height=\"1602\" width=\"2848\" title=\"DSC00289_258573\" \/>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\r\n\t\tValery Rusakov and Bert Rudels manipulate the ITP wire on the spool during lowering.
