{"id":759,"date":"2019-08-26T15:50:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T19:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/?page_id=759"},"modified":"2025-07-11T13:27:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T17:27:14","slug":"research-themes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/research-themes\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Themes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>Research Themes<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/freshwater-shifts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/Figure1_197258.png\" alt=\"Freshwater shifts\" height=\"330\" width=\"400\" title=\"Figure1_197258\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3><a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/freshwater-shifts\/\">Freshwater shifts<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Data collected by an autonomous Ice-Based Observatory that drifted in the Eurasian Basin between April and November 2010 indicate that the upper ocean was appreciably fresher than in 2007 and 2008.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/dissolved-oxygen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/PWmaprev-web_114582.png\" alt=\"Dissolved Oxygen\" height=\"237\" width=\"400\" title=\"PWmaprev-web_114582\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3><a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/dissolved-oxygen\/\">Dissolved Oxygen<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>ITPs provide year-round dissolved oxygen measurements under permanent sea-ice cover in the Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/ocean-surface-mixed-layer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/Fig8_106818.jpg\" alt=\"Ocean surface mixed layer\" height=\"418\" width=\"249\" title=\"Fig8_106818\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3><a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/ocean-surface-mixed-layer\/\">Ocean surface mixed layer<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Variations in the Arctic Central Canada Basin mixed layer properties are documented based on a subset of nearly 6500 temperature and salinity profiles acquired by Ice-Tethered Profilers during the period summer 2004 to summer 2009 and analyzed in conjunction with sea ice observations from Ice Mass Balance Buoys and atmosphere-ocean heat flux estimates.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/shallow-eddies\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/itp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2019\/08\/fig2a_66110.jpg\" alt=\"Shallow eddies\" height=\"197\" width=\"250\" title=\"fig2a_66110\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3><a href=\"\/site\/itp\/hot-topics\/shallow-eddies\/\">Shallow eddies<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>ITPs deployed between 2004 and 2006 have made 21 anticyclonic eddy encounters in the central Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean.
