{"id":1088,"date":"2023-03-06T09:24:10","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T13:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/jenouvrier\/?page_id=1088"},"modified":"2025-09-18T11:18:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T15:18:50","slug":"in-person-visits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/jenouvrier\/outreach\/elementary-school-outreach-activities\/in-person-visits\/","title":{"rendered":"In-person visits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h1>In-person Visits<\/h1>\n<p>As part of our STEM outreach program, we organized several engaging in-person experiences for local elementary school students, offering a hands-on look into marine science and seabird ecology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>WHOI Discovery Center:<\/strong>\u00a0Students learned about ocean science research, engineering, and exploration through interactive presentations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Campus Walking Tour:<\/strong>\u00a0A guided tour of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution campus introduced students to research vessels, docks, and life as a marine scientist.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Touch Tank Experiences:<\/strong>\u00a0At the Redfield Building and the Marine Biological Laboratory, students explored touch tanks where they could interact with crabs, sea stars, urchins, and other marine organisms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Woods Hole Science Aquarium:<\/strong>\u00a0Students visited the country&#8217;s oldest public aquarium, home to around 140 marine species native to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seabird Activities at the Beach:<\/strong>\u00a0Through a hands-on activity about albatross foraging behavior, students experienced how these birds search for food across vast ocean distances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Games to Explore Life History and Chance:<\/strong>\u00a0We introduced simple, engaging games like a drop-board activity and a seabird-themed version of Battleship to help students explore the concepts of survival, reproduction, and the role of chance in nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In-person Visits As part of our STEM outreach program, we organized several engaging in-person experiences for local elementary school students, offering a hands-on look into marine science and seabird ecology: WHOI Discovery Center:\u00a0Students learned about ocean science research, engineering, and exploration through interactive presentations.
