{"id":36,"date":"2018-07-05T11:20:35","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T15:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpdev.whoi.edu\/lab-migration10\/results\/larvae-in-pumps\/"},"modified":"2020-02-28T17:32:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T21:32:20","slug":"larvae-in-pumps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ladder\/results\/larvae-in-pumps\/","title":{"rendered":"Larvae in Pumps"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>\n\t\tLarvae in Pumps\n\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ladder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/07\/DSC_0533_web2_73132-1.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ladder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/07\/DSC_0533_web2_73132-1.jpg\" alt=\"Larvae in pumps\" height=\"480\" width=\"319\" title=\"DSC_0533_web2_73132\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3>Larvae in Pumps<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sampling Larvae in Pumps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We used high-volume water samplers (McLane WTS-LV)\u00a0 to collect larvae of vent species and other plankton near the ridge.\u00a0 The samplers were equipped with 50-L pump heads, and 63 mm mesh filters.\u00a0 Pumps were deployed on pairs of moorings during LADDER-1 and LADDER-2 cruises.\u00a0 On LADDER-1, one mooring of each pair was located within the axial trough near an active, colonized vent and the other roughly 100 m off axis to the east.\u00a0 On LADDER-2, the second mooring was located within the axial trough, but at least 100 m away from active vents.\u00a0\u00a0On each mooring, the lower pump was positioned at 3 m above bottom (mab), and the upper pump at 75 mab, roughly the height of the neutrally buoyant plume (except at K vent where the plume was higher, and the upper pump positioned at 139 mab).\u00a0 The pumps typically sampled for 24 hrs, resulting in sample volumes of ~40,000 L.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h1>\n\t\tLarval distributions\n\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ladder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2018\/07\/pump_2006_nov_tot_73172-1.gif\" alt=\"Larval Vertical Distributions\" height=\"183\" width=\"320\" title=\"pump_2006_nov_tot_73172\" \/>\n\t\tFig. 1.
