It cuts and sizes [via variable id bushings] the sample as the core penetrates the stratified sediment.\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/12L_61920.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/12L_61920.jpg\" alt=\"hydraulic extruder\" height=\"600\" width=\"450\" title=\"12L_61920\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\tThe hydraulic extruder being installed during the final stages of core recovery.\n\t<h3>Hydraulic extruder<\/h3>\n<p>A powerful hydraulic cylinder pushes 3 inch diameter plastic [HDPE] rods to incrementally extrude the liner at the lower end of the core.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/13L_61922.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/13L_61922.jpg\" alt=\"The extruder\" height=\"660\" width=\"439\" title=\"13L_61922\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\tThe extruder is operated from an articulating platform well aft of the Knorr&#8217;s stern. The white plastic pushrods are loaded into the extruder breech and when hydraulic force is applied, extrude the core liner at the base of the core.\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/14L_61924.jpg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/longcore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/07\/14L_61924.jpg\" alt=\"he bottom of the core\" height=\"600\" width=\"450\" title=\"14L_61924\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\tAt the bottom of the core, the liner is cut into 1.5 meter long sections as extrusion proceeds.
