{"id":8,"date":"2021-08-03T12:25:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-03T16:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.personal-site.dev\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2026-08-26T14:29:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T19:29:01","slug":"front-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/","title":{"rendered":"Homepage &#8211; Simple with slider"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\n<p>The METS RCN commenced in 2021, funded by the the National Science Foundation (NSF). <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/129\/2021\/08\/Project-Description-METS-RCN.pdf\">Read the full proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This project will support coordination efforts that bring together participants in large- and small group formats to foster the necessary dialog to develop Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data solutions and practices. The project will include a Consensus Building Workshop and METS Data Working Group to develop reference implementations of a data model for adoption by the METS community; formation of regional METS user networks and a Broadening Users Workshop to identify the needs of a broader range of data end users and associated data interfaces and tools to meet those needs; and a Data Hackathon to build capacity to ingest, analyze, and integrate METS data with other disciplinary and cross-disciplinary data to accelerate scientific discovery.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring together members of the oceanographic, data science, and informatics communities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/projects\/consensus-building-workshop\/\"><strong>build consensus<\/strong><\/a> on key components of a FAIR data model for METS, including common vocabularies, metadata reporting standards, and data citation practices<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/projects\/regional-user-networks\/\"><strong>Engage broader METS data users<\/strong><\/a>, including modelers, educators, and decision makers, to facilitate broader applications of METS data and foster collaborations and regional networks to address climate and environmental challenges<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/projects\/data-capacity\/\"><strong>Identify use cases to develop reference implementation of data workflows<\/strong><\/a> that can be adopted by a range of METS data users<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/projects\/data-working-group\/\"><strong>Build community capacity<\/strong><\/a> for METS data analysis, statistical methods and data-model integration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project will develop community consensus for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-021-00209-4\">FAIR METS data model<\/a>. The METS RCN will leverage the wealth of oceanographic coordination and community building experience and staff capacity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us-ocb.org\/\">Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) Project Office<\/a> and the infrastructure, expertise, and extensive METS data handling experience of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bco-dmo.org\/\">Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO<\/a>), along with an RCN Steering Committee that comprises expertise in the fields of oceanography, data science, earth system models, statistics, and data synthesis.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button aria-label=\"previous\" type=\"button\">\n<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<button aria-label=\"next\" type=\"button\">\n<\/button>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/reports\/\" target=\"_self\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/129\/2026\/08\/METS-report-cover.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/mets-rcn\/reports\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"New report\"><\/a>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h2>New report<\/h2><h1>FAIR Data for Ocean Time Series<\/h1>\n<p>Since the early to mid-20th century, shipboard marine ecological time series (METS), or sustained repeat measurements of physical, biogeochemical, and biological processes, have documented changes in ocean biogeochemistry and marine ecosystems. To date, numerous disconnected databases and interfaces for accessing data have made it difficult for prospective users to find and use these datasets. Limited data access, discoverability, reporting, and interoperability represent a barrier to analyses within and across METS. Standardized guidelines on METS sampling and analytical methods, data and metadata reporting protocols, data sharing culture, and data citation practices are needed to track and expand time series data usage and facilitate comparative studies across METS stations. It is this set of data-related challenges that the METS Research Coordination Network set out to address. This report is a summary of METS RCN activities and efforts, including a culminating community workshop that included representation from a globally distributed set of METS. An extensive quality assessment enables the straightforward detection of method changes, and in combination with further introduced data quality indicators, the pilot enhances the inter- and intra-station comparability of the included time-series stations. The stations in SPOTS represent unique open ocean and coastal marine environments in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the Nordic Seas.
