Common Wire Pool Tension Members
WireCo WorldGroup has been the source of the 3x19 torque-balanced wire rope in 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” and 9/16” diameters. All are typically purchased in 10,000 meter (32,800 ft) continuous lengths. A minimal quantity of 9/16” diameter wire rope is also purchased in 13719 meters (45,000 ft) for use on vessels that are likely to operate in oceanic trench regions.
TE Connectivity/Rochester’s .322” diameter electro-mechanical cable (product code A301592) is a standard cable used throughout the fleet. The .322” EM cable is a double armored cable with three #19 AWG conductors.
Another standard cable in use is the TE Connectivity/Rochester .680” diameter coaxial cable (product code A301241). The .680” coaxial cable has a center conductor with HDPE insulation and a served shield of work hardened copper wire providing 99% coverage. A double armor of galvanized steel on the exterior of the cable provides the strength and low rotation characteristics. The .680” coaxial cable is typically purchased in 9146 meter (30,000 ft) lengths.
The Wire Pool has purchased three different power optic cable designs. They include the TE Connectivity / Rochester A302351 and A309063 designs as well as the Fibron RM0049 design. All three designs have three copper power conductors. The A302351 has three Optical Steel-Lights® and the A309063 has two Optical Steel-Lights® and one optic tube with 4 optical fibers. The RM0049 has six optical fibers in one steel tube.
The Wire Pool currently has two lengths of Cortland 9/16” diameter Plasma HiCo line that are available for temporary loan. Both ropes have been previously used for coring applications.
