They are typically used to snatch lighter pieces of equipment from the sea and move equipment around on deck with the help of air tuggers and lighter winches.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team modifies the pelican hooks for onboard use.\u00a0 They first remove a safety latch so that the hooks can be engaged with a rope, rather than a hand. The next step is to weld a square stock steel rod to the bottom of the hook so it can be inserted into a pickup rod that will allow a team member to be safely away from equipment to be snagged. Once the hook is in place, it snaps and the rod disengages, leaving the rope and hook tethered to the snagged equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The rod itself has been designed to facilitate ease of use.\u00a0 Made of tapered carbon fiber, the rod is versatile, lightweight, and strong.\u00a0 It typically comes in six-foot lengths that can be spring pin attached to create a length needed for a specific job.\u00a0 Modified end pieces of one- and four- feet lengths are also available to customize lengths.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_533483\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-533483\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-533483\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ooi-expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2022\/09\/IMG_0855.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ooi-expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2022\/09\/IMG_0855.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ooi-expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2022\/09\/IMG_0855-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ooi-expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2022\/09\/IMG_0855-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/ooi-expedition\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/143\/2022\/09\/IMG_0855-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-533483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These snap hooks are made of titanium and are capable of holding 10,000 pounds.
