Every component of the mooring system is brought back to the surface, leaving nothing behind on the seafloor. This approach supports responsible ocean engineering practices while enabling detailed post-recovery inspection, maintenance, and redeployment of valuable scientific infrastructure.

Of course, long deployments at sea can sometimes attract unexpected passengers, and recoveries occasionally return with a few marine hitchhikers attached.

Video: Watch the Central Surface Mooring in Action

Image credit: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Image credit: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

The OOI-CGSN team successfully completed recovery of the Central Surface Mooring (CNSM), marking another major operational milestone for the Pioneer Array expedition.
