{"id":938,"date":"2018-06-21T12:33:58","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T16:33:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/osl\/?page_id=938"},"modified":"2018-06-25T09:16:09","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T13:16:09","slug":"remus-6000-lars","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/osl\/vehicles\/remus-6000-lars\/","title":{"rendered":"REMUS 6000 Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>REMUS 6000 Launch and Recovery System (LARS)<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/osl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/06\/graphics-Air_France_Mike_Purcell_GPS-_DSC0077-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The REMUS Launch and Recovery System has made over 1000 successful launch and recoveries to date.\u00a0 Due to the vehicle&#8217;s larger size, this self-contained system has been engineered here at WHOI in the OSL.\u00a0 It enables the L &amp; R of the vehicle in sea states up to those created by the Beaufort Scale 5 winds.<\/p>\n<p>It requires only one operator and, therefore, does away with the need to use tag lines eliminating extra people on deck and creating a safer working environment.<\/p>\n<p>LARS is installed on the stern of a ship. For launch, the LARS has a built-in A-frame, which tilts the cradle up and over,\u00a0while leaving the vehicle hanging by its nose well\u00a0clear of the fantail. The\u00a0cradle supports the vehicle\u00a0during A-frame rotation, stabilizing the vehicle until it is a safe distance from the stern. The docking head provides damping to reduce swing in heavy seas.
