Undergraduate Students

The Paleo-FISHES lab welcomes undergraduate students at all stages, supported through both WHOI and NSF-sponsored programs. WHOI has a variety of undergraduate research programs that run during the summer, and there are also potential opportunities for academic-year research. If you are an undergraduate student interested in joining the Paleo-FISHES Lab, please reach out to Elizabeth to discuss options. Please note that you do not have to have prior research experience to join this lab!

Summer Student Fellowships (SSF) are WHOI-supported research internships for undergraduate students entering their last year of collegiate study. Summer Fellows live at WHOI and spend 10-12 weeks developing an independent research project, as well as attending talks and professional development programming for undergraduate researchers. Students selected for participation receive a stipend, travel support, and room and board for the summer. Application Deadline: February 2025 TBD

Woods Hole Partnerships in Education Program (PEP) is a multi-institution program supporting rising Juniors and Seniors from underrepresented groups in marine sciences to participate in research and marine science education. PEP includes a 10-week internship, a summer course in global change and marine sciences, and participation in numerous lectures, field trips, and other professional development activities. Students selected for participation receive a stipend, travel support, and room and board for the summer. Application Deadline: February 2025 TBD

The Paleo-FISHES lab also supports undergraduate researchers through independent grants wen funding is available (for example, we hosted the Accessible Sharks summer research program in 2023 and 2024), and have supported numerous Senior Thesis projects. If you are an undergraduate student interested in research opportunities (academic year or summer), but don't see something for you in the above list, please reach out to discuss options.
