Changes in ocean currents affect hurricane activity, rainfall patterns, and temperatures on land. We are scientists who answer basic questions about sea level and ocean circulation in a changing climate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/piecuch\/people\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/piecuch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/144\/2022\/02\/home-people.png\" alt=\"people\" height=\"191\" width=\"191\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uu.nl\/staff\/RSWvandeWal\">Roderik van de Wal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Nov.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2022<\/strong>\n\t<p>Chris traveled to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahbdas\">Sarah Das<\/a> and 10 PhD candidates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mit.whoi.edu\/\">MIT-WHOI Joint Program<\/a> to participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanpavilion-cop.org\/\">Ocean Pavilion<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cop27.eg\/\">2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Nov.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2022<\/strong>\n\t<p>Chris <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/view\/journals\/phoc\/52\/11\/JPO-D-22-0090.1.xml\">published a paper on the ocean&#8217;s low-frequency dynamic response to barometric-pressure loading<\/a>, along with coauthors <a href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/fukumori\/\">Ichiro Fukumori<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=yBlld5EAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Rui Ponte<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gess.uni-bonn.de\/mitarbeiter\/prof.-dr.-techn.-michael-schindelegger\">Michael Schindelegger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/owang\/\">Ou Wang<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=RyxYSX4AAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Mengnan Zhao<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Oct-Nov.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2022<\/strong>\n\t<p>Jake attended the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gstm-2022.eu\/\">GRACE\/GRACE-FO<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ostst-altimetry-2022.com\/\">Ocean Surface Topography<\/a> Science Team Meetings to present his research on the impact of deep-ocean warming on coastal sea-level rise in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Sep.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2022<\/strong>\n\t<p>Chris attended the United Kingdom Sea Level and Coasts Meeting hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durham.ac.uk\/departments\/academic\/geography\/research\/clusters\/sea-level-ice-climate\/\">Geography Department at Durham University<\/a> where he presented his recent work on reconstructing Holocene sea-level changes.<\/p>\n\t<strong>Aug.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2022<\/strong>\n\t<p>Chris co-authored a paper, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brettbuzz\">Brett Buzzanga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/frederikset\">Thomas Frederikse<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bhamlington\">Ben Hamlington<\/a>, submitted to <em>Nature Geoscience<\/em> on U.S. East Coast sea-level rise since 1900 and its relation to ocean dynamics.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\/site\/piecuch\/people\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/piecuch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/144\/2022\/02\/home-people.png\" alt=\"people\" height=\"191\" width=\"191\" title=\"home-people\"
