Postdoctoral Researchers
- Every year, WHOI offers competitive, 18-month postdoctoral scholarships to recent doctoral program graduates. Postdoctoral scholars receive a stipend of $70,000 per year, plus relocation and health and welfare allowances, as well as a modest research budget ~$12,000). Applications are due in the Fall.
- If you are interested in applying for a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to come work at WHOI, please reach out for guidance (across@whoi.edu).

Graduate students
- WHOI runs a five-year PhD program with MIT. The MIT-WHOI Joint Program is organized into five sub-disciplinary areas: Applied Ocean Science and Engineering, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Physical Oceanography. Joint Program students receive five years of tuition and stipend support, plus funds for attending scientific meetings, conferences, and special courses and to support research activities. Housing at WHOI and MIT is provided for qualified students, and transportation between the two campuses runs weekly.

Undergraduate research assistants
- WHOI offers paid undergraduate research opportunities through the WHOI Summer Student Fellowship program—an immersive, 12-week experience involving hands-on research, lectures, and a one-day research cruise. The SSF program is open to students who have completed their junior year, and students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
