Alex and DIYnamics team lead teaching workshop in Pasadena, CA
During July 2023, Alex Gonzalez and the DIYnamics team co-convened a session at the ninth annual Earth Educators’ Rendezvous (EER) in Pasadena, CA entitled, “Teaching Atmosphere, Ocean, and Climate Dynamics with Interactive Demonstrations.” (https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2023/program/morning_workshops/w4/index.html). The theme of this year’s workshop was on the atmospheric rivers that slammed California during the winter of 2022–2023.
There were about 35 participants in their session, with a wide variety of participants, including high school teachers, professors from 2- and 4-year colleges, and graduate students. ISU applied for and received funding from NSF for participants’ materials, including 40 Lego-based systems (https://diynamics.github.io/pages/kits.html).
This was the second time the DIYnamics team conducted a workshop at EER and participants spots filled to capacity quickly. A highlight of the workshop was the creation of the DIYnamics Public Forum Slack Channel. Please email Alex or another member of the DIYnamics team to be invited to the channel.
The team is looking for ways to adapt and expand these teaching workshops. Look out for updates about EER 2024, which will be in Philadelphia, PA.
