We study how these alterations impact oil spill fate and trajectory models and response operations.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Plastics<\/h3>\n<p>Plastics are ubiquitous in the environment. We want to understand what controls their breakdown so that we can inform designs of new materials that breakdown quicker.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Dissolved Organic Matter<\/h3>\n<p>Sunlight can completely oxidize DOM into CO<sub>2<\/sub>, a greenhouse gas, and partially alter DOM into new compounds. We study the rates and controls of these reactions.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Instrument Development<\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re building tools that make it easier for folks to study how organic carbon cycles in surface waters.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/site\/wardlab\/projects\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLearn More\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>The Ward Lab<\/h2>\n<p>Our facility is housed in Fye Laboratory as part of the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department at WHOI.\u00a0 We are broadly interested in characterizing the rates and pathways of organic carbon degradation in aquatic ecosystems.
