Helping communities adapt to sea-level rise with low-cost sensor networks.<\/p>\n\t

The Problem<\/h2>\n

The rate of sea-level rise has accelerated dramatically over the last 60 years.\u00a0 Much of the United States could see sea-levels increase by 10 – 12 inches over the next 30 years.\u00a0 Communities along the coast are experiencing more flooding, impacting our roads, homes, public-health, and safety.\u00a0 Moving into the future, as sea-levels continue to rise, those floods will only get worse.<\/p>\n

Coastal communities are investing heavily in resiliency and adaptation to sea-level rise.\u00a0 There is only limited coastal water-level data, missing much of the fine detail in and along the coast.\u00a0 This lack of real-world data means communities do not have the information they need to plan and prepare.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"ScituateHarbor\"\n\t

The Solution<\/h2>\n

Empower coastal communities by developing and deploying robust, low-cost, water-level sensors to meet their specific flooding detection and planning needs. We envision a future where all communities can be equipped with networks of water-level sensors that provide data to inform policy and response to flooding; that validate costal risk models; and advance the understanding of coastal flooding and its relation to storm surge, tides, and sea-level rise.<\/p>\n\t

Who We Are<\/h2>\n

We are scientists and engineers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution that are passionate about helping all communities adapt to the challenges of sea-level rise.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"sarahdas_headshot_whoi\"\n\t

Dr. Sarah Das<\/h1>\n

Sarah is a glaciologist and climate scientist who has spent over 25 years leading research expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic to study melting polar ice sheets and their contribution to sea level rise.\u00a0 She is excited to now also be working closer to home, using science-based solutions to improve coastal community resilience.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"cgp\"\n\t

Dr. Christopher Piecuch<\/h1>\n

Chris is a physical oceanographer who’s interested in the physics and statistics of sea-level rise and coastal flooding.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"LeviHeadShot2\"\n\t

Levi Gorrell<\/h1>\n

With almost 20 years experience in ocean instrumentation, Levi brings experience in instrument design, development, and deployment.<\/p>\n\t

Phase 1<\/h2>\n

The initial phase of the water level project involved designing and building prototype low-cost water level sensors to deploy near existing NOAA tide gauges<\/a> for data validation.\u00a0 In this phase, three water level sensors were developed and place adjacent to NOAA tide gauges in Southeastern Massachusetts.\u00a0 The sites chosen were New Bedford, Woods Hole, and Chatham.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"20231031_122524\"\n\t\t\t\t\"20240215_103544\"\n\t\t\t\t\"IMG_3746\"\n\t

Below you will find the data for all of our currently deployed water-level sensors.\u00a0 As new instruments come online, they will be added to this page.<\/p>\n
