The Indian Ocean is subdivided by numerous ridges with rough topography.\u00a0 Tidal energy is focused in the western Indian Ocean, which just happens to overly the very rough Southwest Indian Ridge.\u00a0 Diffusivity estimates based on direct velocity measurements made during the 1995 WOCE survey show enhanced diffusivity associated with portions of these ridges (Kunze et al., 2006) (Fig. 1.6).\u00a0 The Kerguelen hotspot is apparently not associated with the tides, but with the deflection of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.whoi.edu\/staff\/amacdonald\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/77\/2020\/02\/fig1.5a_235734.png\" alt=\"Surface fluxes for CO2 and freshwater.\" height=\"142\" width=\"208\" title=\"fig1.5a_235734\" \/>\n\t\tFig. 1.5a Surface fluxes for CO2 and freshwater.
