I study population models that include the life cycle, the vital rates, dispersal patterns, and temporal and spatial variation in the environment. These concepts and methods are equally applicable to human and non-human species. I use these models to explore population growth, kinship networks, extinction, and sources of variation and inequality in demographic outcomes. I apply the results to evolutionary demography and conservation biology. My research is defined by processes, not taxa; at the moment it considers humans, marine mammals, seabirds, terrestrial plants, and benthic invertebrates.

Information for prospective students

I am not taking on graduate students at this time, although I interact with Joint Program students and sometimes contribute to classes.

      Download CV

Education

Ph.D., Michigan State University, 1974 (Zoology)

B.S.
