Director,<\/strong> Geodynamics Program<\/a><\/p>\n Chair<\/strong>, MIT-WHOI Joint Program Committee for Marine Geology and Geophysics<\/a><\/p>\n Co-chief scientist<\/strong>, Water Level Project<\/a><\/p>\nContact Information:<\/strong> Dr. Sarah Das is a polar and climate scientist, educator, and explorer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. \u00a0Her research interests include the reconstruction of past climate from ice-cores; understanding and measuring polar ice sheet mass balance and ice dynamics; exploring the interaction between coupled cryosphere-atmosphere-ocean-biogeochemical systems; and using science-based solutions to improve coastal resilience.\u00a0Over her career she has led over 20 scientific expeditions to the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.<\/p>\n She is very active in training the “next generation” of polar and climate scientists, regularly teaching and mentoring post-docs and Ph.D students as a faculty member of the\u00a0MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography<\/em>, as well as working closely with K-12 teachers and students.<\/p>\n She is also committed to sharing the importance of climate science and the excitement of scientific discovery with policy makers and the public. She serves on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s<\/em> Climate Science Advisory Panel, is part of the American Geophysical Union’s <\/em>Congressional Science Partners Program, <\/em>and is an ambassador with the national non-partisan organization Science Moms<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Dr. Das also recently completed two terms as an invited member of the Polar Research Board\u00a0of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em>, served on the National Research Council’<\/em>s\u00a0Committee for Future Science Opportunities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean,\u00a0and was an expert in the AAAS<\/em> ‘What We Know’\u00a0Climate Change project.<\/p>\n Dr. Das is frequently quoted in media outlets including AP News, CNBC, New York Times, BBC, <\/em>and the Boston Globe.\u00a0<\/em>She has also been featured on podcasts such as Science Vs<\/em>, Science Friday<\/em>, Quirks and Quarks<\/em>, and We Don’t Have Time<\/em>, and has been a featured scientist at the\u00a0Woods Hole Film Festival<\/em>, at\u00a0Climate Science Day\u00a0<\/em>on Capitol Hill, on\u00a0NPR<\/em>,\u00a0NOVA<\/em>, at the\u00a0Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History<\/em>, the\u00a0MIT Museum<\/em>, and in the popular science book “Science On Ice,<\/em>” among many other outlets.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n Dr. Das is an experienced, engaging, inspiring and impactful public speaker on topics including polar (Arctic & Antarctic) science, climate science, climate change impacts, sea level rise and coastal resilience.
