Denmark Strait 2011

Denmark Strait is the body of water separating Greenland and Iceland. It is one of the primary sources of south bound cold dense water that replenishes north bound warm water from the Gulf Stream. One purpose of this project is to use LADCP and shipboard ADCP data to measure the currents that make up the Denmark Strait Overflow (DSO). The DSO is made up of water with arctic origins flowing south along the East of Greenland known as the East Greenland Current and water originating in the Iceland and Greenland Seas flowing west along the north coast of Iceland known as North Icelandic Jet. These currents combine to form the Denmark Strait Overflow.
