Research Program

Penguin Life Observatories
We study three different penguin species, Emperor Penguins, King Penguins and Adelie Penguins, using self-designed remote-controlled observing systems. Research questions encompass: Collective Behavior, Population Dynamics, Phenology, Abundance Estimation and Observing System Develop

Automatic Whale Detection
We research methods to best detect large whales in front and around vessels, to avoid ship-strikes, protect the animals from loud underwater sound sources, study their behavior and estimate their distribution and abundance

Ocean Acoustics
We study sound in the ocean, with particular application a focus on marine life, where we use a physics based understanding of underwater sound propagation to infer marine life abundance and distribution from passive acoustic recordings. We design instruments that will allow future large-scale real-time ocean acoustic observing networks.
