Global Surface Mooring Successfully Deployed in the North Atlantic
The OOI Coastal and Global Scale Nodes (CGSN) team has successfully deployed the Global Surface Mooring (GSM) as part of the ongoing Irminger Sea Array operations.
The GSM is equipped with a suite of meteorological, oceanographic, and biological sensors, designed to collect continuous data from the atmosphere, ocean surface, and throughout the water column. This high-resolution data supports long-term ocean monitoring and helps scientists study processes like air-sea exchange, climate variability, and ecosystem dynamics.
This mooring will remain deployed for 12 to 14 months, operating autonomously in one of the most dynamic and extreme ocean environments on the planet – facing strong winds, large waves, and drifting icebergs.
