Ann Bucklin

Guest Investigator, WHOI Biology Department
Professor of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut

Research Interests:
My research focus is the molecular ecology and evolution of zooplankton. My laboratory group uses diverse molecular approaches to study population genomics, phylogeography, species diversity, and evolution of marine holozooplankton.

Kristina Kvile

Kristina Kvile

Guest Investigator

Research Interests: I am a marine ecologist studying how climate change influences zooplankton communities at high latitudes. Most of my work has focused on Calanus copepods, which dominate zooplankton biomass in Arctic and subarctic regions and play important ecological roles as consumers of microplankton and prey for other animals. I combine data-driven (statistical) and numerical (mechanistic) modeling to understand spatial and temporal variation in zooplankton populations on regional and pan-Arctic scales. Complementing modeling with observational studies in the field, I aim to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive observed changes in polar ecosystems.

Kate Lowry

Kate Lowry

Guest Investigator

Research Interests: My work investigates the impact of climate change on polar marine ecosystems.  In particular, my research uses satellite remote sensing and oceanographic fieldwork to explore topics related to:

  1. Physical-biological interactions
  2. Phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics
  3. Under-ice phytoplankton blooms
  4. Arctic circulation and sea ice
  5. Antarctic coastal polynyas

Visiting Scholar

Research Interests: Plankton phenology and biogeography; Marine ecosystem dynamics and biological-physical interactions. For polar regions, I will focus on how climate change influences primary production, mainly based on satellite-derived data analysis and statistical/numerical modeling.

Visiting Scholar

Research Interests: My major is marine zooplankton ecology especially copepods.  My research fields are from epipelagic to deep-sea, and covering from subarctic to Arctic.  In Hokkaido University, my home institution, I have double accounts of Faculty of Fisheries and Arctic Research Center.  That is why I am studying zooplankton ecology in the Arctic Ocean.  During my sabbatical stay in WHOI (scheduled one year during March 2018 to March 2019), I will evaluate life cycle of mesopelagic copepods in the Arctic Ocean by analyzing samples collected by SHEBA project under supervising/host with Dr. Carin J. Ashjian.
