Research Interests

I am a research associate in the Fisheries Oceanography and Larval Fish Ecology (FOLFE) Lab under the direction of Dr. Joel Llopiz. As a member of The Ocean Twilight Zone project, I study the life history of mesopelagic fish species, with a focus on reproductive biology. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about an ecosystem before it experiences extensive exploitation!

My previous research involved life history studies of groundfish species of the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem and off the US Northeast Atlantic coast, as well as pelagic fish species off the US Southeastern Atlantic coast. I use histological techniques to determine reproductive strategy and spawning phenology; image analysis and microscopy to estimate fecundity (reproductive output); and microscopy to determine ages using otoliths. Ultimately, the research I conduct is incorporated into population estimates that help inform fisheries management.

My other interests include early life history, ontogeny, and taxonomy of marine fishes as well as environmental outreach and education. You will find me in the lab most work days, though I have extensive at-sea experience on vessels including outboard whalers, commercial fishing vessels, federal survey vessels, and UNOLS research vessels.
