An important step in any coring operation is site selection. A general coring location is typically selected according to its geographic position and topography, “Is the site likely to have been subjected to the processes being studied. Is the topography indicative of a good depositional center allowing for sediment accumulation?”

Once a site has been selected the next step prior to coring is to identify the existence of a sedimentary record, including what the nature of that record might be. This is accomplished by employing non-invasive geophysical prospection tools capable of imaging the sub-surface geology. The type of tool used depends on the environment being studied (fresh water ponds, salt water bays, dry land, etc.).
