Albatross flight and dynamic soaring (graphical abstract)

A study of the flight of albatrosses, how they extract energy from the wind, and how they soar around the world with almost no flapping of their wings (dynamic soaring). A recent study is of wandering albatross flight speed as measured by GPS, and an investigations of observations of dynamic soaring by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago.

Agulhas-Benguela current system (schematic of leakage)

A study of how Indian Ocean water flows around southern Africa and into the Atlantic Benguela Current, including the role of anticyclonic and cyclonic Agulhas eddies.

Historical Studies (First BF Chart)

Studies of some historical aspects of ocean circulation such as the discovery of Ben Franklin’s first chart of the Gulf Stream, the history of schematic diagrams of the meridional overturning circulation, drifting derelicts in the Atlantic, and the Columbus landfall controversy.

Mediterranean Outflow eddies (Meddy trajectories)

Studies of the formation, number, movement, and demise of Meddies and their role in dispersing the Mediterranean Outflow Water into the North Atlantic.

Equatorial Current studies

A study of the variability of equatorial currents in the Atlantic and the across-equatorial flow associated with meridional transport.

Gulf Stream, Caribbean Current, North Brazil Current, ocean eddies

Studies of the northward flow of upper layer water that crosses the equator and the formation and movement of eddies in these currents.
