Second Long core system installed aboard Kopri Icebreaker ARAON

The new ice breaking research vessel ARAON operated by the Korean Polar Institute, Songdo City, South Korea.

In January of 2011, WHOI and the Korean Polar Institute signed an agreement that funded the engineering and construction of new Long Core system, to be installed on the recently built icebreaker Araon. After 20 months of development, fabrication and integration, a modified version of the WHOI Long Core was delivered to KOPRI and installed by WHOI personnel in September and October 2012. The new system, operated by KOPRI, expands the Long Core capability to polar regions. Coring in the field will begin in 2013 after the vessels dedicated Plasma winch system is upgraded to provide additional power necessary for Long Core ops.
