Seagrasses are vital coastal habitats that provide a number of vital ecosystem services, including habitat provisioning, shoreline protection, and carbon sequestration. Unfortunately, global stressors (such as ocean warming) and local stressors (such as eutrophication) threaten these important habitats. Along the New England coast, Zostera marina (eelgrass) has experienced a marked decline due to land use practices and eutrophication. Seagrass Meadow Underwater Restoration Platforms (SMURPs) aim to restore eelgrass to eutrophic coastal systems by increasing light availability, while also leveraging the denitrifying capabilities of the rhizosphere to improve water quality.
