Postdoc Opportunities

NOSAMS offers Postdoctoral positions through Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Academic Programs Office.  The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution offers several types of postdoctoral awards. A term appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Scholar, Fellow, or Investigator may be offered to an individual who has completed the requirements for a Ph.D. degree. The degree may or may not have been officially awarded; a letter from the individual's university asserting that he or she has completed all of the requirements for the degree is satisfactory for establishing eligibility for the position. Each type of postdoctoral appointment has a slightly different selection and appointment procedure.

POSTDOCTORAL INVESTIGATOR

Postdoctoral Investigator positions are available at the Institution. Investigators normally will be required to conduct research and studies in areas directly relevant to existing grants or contracts. Postdoctoral Investigator appointments normally are initially for one year, renewable for an additional year up to a maximum of four years of WHOI only, or five years of combined postdoctoral level experience. A Postdoctoral Investigator will be treated as a regular, full-time employee if the initial appointment is for at least one full year. Temporary Postdoctoral Investigators may be appointed for a period of time less than one year.

Eighteen-month Postdoctoral Scholar awards are offered to recipients of new or recent doctorates in the fields of chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, and biology as well as oceanography. The awards are designed to further the education and training of the applicant with primary emphasis placed on the individual's research promise.

Postdoctoral Fellows may be appointed in two types of categories: Postdoctoral Scholar Fellows supported by Institution scholarship funds, or Postdoctoral Fellows who have been competitively awarded national or international postdoctoral fellowships.

Further information and application forms may be obtained through WHOI's Academic Programs office or by contacting the WHOI Postdoctoral Coordinator at: postdoc@whoi.edu; or (508) 289-2950.
