Deployment of ITPs 4, 5 and 6

In 2006, three ITPs (numbers 4, 6, and 5) were deployed in the Beaufort Gyre and reported at "Cruise – 2006 Dispatches – Dispatch 29", "Cruise - 2006 Dispatches - Dispatch 31", and "Cruise - 2006 Dispatches - Dispatch 34".

ITP 4 was deployed on a 3.5 m thick ice floe on September 3, 2006 near 78.1 N, 149.0 W.  The unit operated on a standard schedule of 2 one-way profiles between 7 and 760 m depth each day.  However, the inductive modem link between the underwater profiler and surface buoy did not function, so the profiler data (698 casts) were not recovered until the ITP was retrieved on August 17, 2007 at 78° 30 N, 139° 34 W.

ITP 5 was deployed on a 3.0 m thick icefloe on September 7, 2006 near 75.9 N, 138.1 W.  The ITP unit operated on a fast sampling schedule of 3 one-way profiles between 7 and 760 m depth each day.

ITP 6 was deployed on a 3.1 m thick ice floe on September 4, 2006 near 77.9 N, 140.4 W. On the same icefloe, a US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Ice Mass Balance Buoy (IMB 07413) and a Naval Postgraduate School Arctic Ocean Flux Buoy (AOFB) were also installed. The ITP is operated on a standard sampling schedule of 2 one-way profiles between 9 and 760 m depth each day. GPS locations are not avaiable from the ITP between September 13 to November 10, 2007, so hourly averaged Argos locations from the IMB are used for that period.
