Endurance 23 Recovery Cruise Returns to Newport with All Goals Met

By: Amber Coogan  |  September 25, 2025

The OOI Endurance Array Team has much to be proud of during this cruise. Skilled, dedicated, creative, and hardworking, the team has successfully met, and exceeded, the objectives of the Fall 2025 Recovery Cruise. Over the past 15 years, together with colleagues across the OOI, the team has built and operated the NSF OOI Endurance Array. The data collected by this array will continue to enable ocean research for many years to come.

On Sept 25, the R/V Sally Ride is scheduled to return to Newport around 3 PM, marking the completion of the cruise with all goals met and several additional accomplishments achieved.

Highlights

In addition to the planned recoveries of Endurance moorings, the team:

  • Deployed a Newport line deep glider to operate for the first two months of PYVIII.
  • Replaced a broken METBK anemometer on the Oregon Shelf mooring.
  • Recovered two old CSPP anchors at the Oregon Shelf site.
  • Supported testing of a shipboard pCO₂ system for RCRV Taani, led by Anna Hughes, a graduate student at OSU.
  • Conducted an EK80 calibration survey around the RCA Oregon Shelf site for Dr. Mei Sato (WHOI).
  • Provided at-sea work experience for Maya Moran, an OSU undergraduate student technical assistant with OOI.
  • Recovered several PacWave anchors on short notice.
  • Confirmed that the Oregon Shelf mooring can remain in place until spring 2026.

Looking Ahead

Because the ship must wait until the mid-afternoon high tide to return to port, the team plans to attempt recovery of the last PacWave anchor on the morning of Sept 25. They will also clean the deck and secure recovered mooring components prior to arrival in Newport.

With all primary cruise objectives complete, and additional goals accomplished, the Fall 2025 Recovery Cruise stands as a highly successful mission for the Endurance Array.
