Northern Surface Mooring Repairs Extend Long-Term Deployment

By: Amber Coogan  |  May 6, 2026

With support from the R/V Neil Armstrong small boat team and favorable weather conditions, the OOI-CGSN team successfully completed critical repairs on the Northern Surface Mooring (NOSM), helping extend the operational life of this important observing platform.

During the operation, damaged wind turbines on the buoy were replaced, restoring essential power-generating capabilities for the mooring system. Chris Basque is shown onboard the buoy carrying out the turbine repairs while also installing additional navigation beacons to further support the mooring’s continued deployment.

These maintenance efforts are especially significant as NOSM has already exceeded its typical deployment duration, continuing to provide valuable oceanographic and meteorological data well beyond initial expectations.
