Pioneer and Endurance Expeditions Happening Simultaneously

First Deployment of Pioneer Array in Mid-Atlantic Bight and 20th Recovery and Deployment of Endurance Array

OOI teams will be working simultaneously, but in different oceans this April. The first deployment of the Coastal Pioneer Array in its new location in the Atlantic off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC, will begin on April 1 aboard the R/V Neil Armstrong. The 20th expedition to recover and deploy the Coastal Endurance Array in the Pacific, off the coasts of Washington and Oregon, will begin March 28 aboard the R/V Atlantis. You can follow along on each journey on this page. Keep checking back. There will be lots of action to report!

R/V Neil Armstrong


The R/V Neil Armstrong is a state-of-the-art oceangoing research vessel. The ship is 238 feet long, can sustain speeds of 10 knots, has a range of 11,500 nautical miles, and can remain at sea for up to 40 days. Named for the American hero whose “small step” provided humanity with a new perspective on our planet, this vessel carries on its namesake’s legacy of exploration.
