Short Course on Data Assimilation for Sea-Ice Modelers
Theme
A NASA-sponsored short course on data assimilation for sea-ice modelers will be held May 10-11, 2003, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Woods Hole, MA, immediately preceding the AMS Seventh Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography. The short course will be taught by Prof. Carl Wunsch and by Dr. Patrick Heimbach of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will include coverage of the following topics:
- Basic machinery of discrete inverse methods: regression, least squares, singular vectors, etc.
- The time-dependent inverse problem: Green's functions, representers, Kalman filter and optimal smoothers, and the adjoint method.
- Automatic adjoint model generation and application of the adjoint method to the ocean circulation inverse problem.
- Development of an adjoint model for a coupled sea-ice, ocean model.
